My time in the beautiful scenes of Dorfromantik

Posted on June 9, 2024

While browsing newly released games back in May 2022, I stumbled upon Dorfromantik.
The game looked cute and charming in the preview. Since it was not that expensive either I decided to try it out and bought it.

Now two years later I can say that Dorfromantik is my “go to” game when I want to chill and relax. This is the reason i decided to blog about this game, here at Zoneofgamer.com. The game invites you to unwind and lose yourself in its beauty, offering a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The game

It is a very charming and pretty addictive tile-placement game that offers a delightful blend of relaxation and strategic challenges. Set in a picturesque countryside, players are tasked with creating idyllic landscapes by placing hexagonal tiles adorned with various features like forests, fields, rivers, and villages.

It all feels like; imagine stepping into a serene countryside, where time seems to slow down, and every moment is filled with tranquility and beauty.

From the moment you start the game, you are greeted by a canvas of rolling hills, meandering rivers, lush forests, and quaint villages. Each hexagonal tile you place becomes a brushstroke on this picturesque landscape, allowing you to shape and create your own idyllic countryside.

The game’s simple mechanics make it accessible to players of all skill levels, yet there is a surprising amount of depth to the strategic decisions involved.

One of the most enchanting aspects of Dorfromantik is its immersive atmosphere. The gentle rustle of leaves, the soft babbling of streams, and the distant chirping of birds all combine to create a sense of serenity that envelops you as you play. You can even hear the cows mooing and horses neighing.

Was once on facetime with my mum and had the game running in the background and even she asked me why she could hear cows mooing considering that I live in an apartment.

As you expand your countryside by placing the tiles, you will uncover new terrain types, unlock special tiles with unique features, and encounter a variety of quests and challenges that test your skills and ingenuity. Whether you’re trying to create the longest river, the largest forest, or the most sprawling village, there is always something new and exciting to discover.

With each tile placement, you must carefully consider how it will affect the overall landscape, balancing your desire for aesthetic harmony with the need to score points and complete objectives. Do you extend a river to connect it to a lake, or do you use the tile to complete a forest and fulfill a quest? Every decision you make has consequences, adding a layer of challenge and complexity that keeps you engaged and invested in the gameplay.

Quests

In the big pile of tiles that you start with, are some special tiles that contains quests. In the picture below are five quests.

Once a quest is completed it will get a green check mark. For each completed quest, you gain more tiles, which lets you build  more and continue playing.

In total there are 5 different quest tiles.

The water/river tile with a light blue waterdrop in it and a 2+, the quest here is that you must connect minimum 2 or more tiles of river/water to that tile.

The tree tile with a 5+ tree icon, means that you must add tiles with a minimum of 5 trees to it to complete it.

The tile on the right side, the house tile with a 3+ means that you need to connect at least three or more houses.

Then there is a rail tile, with a 3+ and at the bottom you have the field tile with 3+ containing beautiful fields.

The game modes

The game offers 6 different modes.

You have Classic Mode, which is the main mode of the game where you start with a set number of tiles and aim to build as pleasing landscape as possible. There are no time limits or specific goals, allowing you to relax and enjoy the creative process. You simply play until you run out of tiles.

Then there is Creative Mode: You have an infinite supply of tiles, as well as the option to discard unfitting tiles. You can build the most beautiful landscapes without restrictions. This mode is perfect for you who enjoy the sandbox aspect of the game and want to see how far you can expand the landscape.

Next you have Quick Mode where you have a limited number of tiles to place. It is a pretty quick playthrough with a focus on beating your own high score by collecting as many points as possible, until you run out of the tiles.

If you wish to have more challenge, there is the Hard Mode. It is like Classic Mode but with a more difficult version that has fewer quests, a steeper difficulty curve and more complex tiles.

The fifth mode is the Monthly Mode. The monthly mode offers a new configuration of custom rules and fixed seed each month. You can enjoy the variety and compete with others on the map of the month.

Last mode to mention is the Custom mode. Here you can experiment with different custom rules and settings to create your very own game mode. You can share your seed with others to play on the same map with the same tiles.

Biomes

Beside the different modes, you can also choose between different biomes of the landscape. Beside Standard there is Fjord, Enchanted, Sakura, Lavender, Blossom, and Midwinter. My personal favorite is Sakura due to the lovely pinkish tones of trees and the background, as you can see below.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a game to unwind to and relax, look no further than Dorfromantik.  With its’ soothing background music and appealing graphics, I strongly recommend the game. Did you love my blog about Dorfromantik? Take a look at my experience with Sons of the Forest.
